I have my friend Nathan to thank for that last line, "Think outside the bun."

When I realized "Ronald" only speaks in old fast food slogans, I was hard pressed to think of the line that would convict Speed Cameron to consider this adventure from a different perspective.  Thinking "outside the bun" is as good as "thinking outside the box."  So, thanks, Nate, for putting words in Ronald's mouth, since he's been putting burgers in ours for decades.

I very fondly remember a McDonald's Playland restaurant near my house in Stratford, Connecticut.  This wasn't just a tube and ballpit playground; the McDonald's Playland had a complete underground floor full of rides and playground equipment themed after Ronald and his friends.  I think they're all gone now, but I found a great article about some of those old attractions here.  I vividly remember a kid getting his head stuck between the bars of the Officer Big Mac Climber.  Talk about taking a bite out of crime!

Much of Amazing Arizona Comics is influenced by 15 seconds of the movie Demolition Man, when Sandra Bullock tells Sly that Taco Bell won The Franchise Wars.  Since then, I've been fascinated with the idea that each fast food company has its own living mascot that, at some point in the future, will actually battle for franchise dominance.  This page introduces the concept, which propels the action in this issue, and hints at things to come!

I'm surprised more comics aren't using QR barcodes.  I know, they're so 2011, but I think their power in print storytelling shouldn't be underestimated.  Here, the barcode doubles as the newspaper filler, usually represented by miscellaneous text anyway, but once scanned it reveals the very article that's motivating Speed Cameron.  It ties the comic to the real world, which, obviously from page 1, was the whole point!
